What’s the first information you consume in the morning?
The first thing I do is look at Reddit. Being a dad, between making pancakes and driving to school, I don’t have a lot of time to look at all the news, so Reddit condenses all that information. Whatever is happening on the Internet, it’s all in one spot.
What occupies your mind in the car?
In my car, usually I listen to Top 40 radio, like Kiss LA or 98.7 FM, just to know what’s being played out here. I also listen to a lot of satellite radio, like SiriusXM U, where I’m able to hear up-and-coming stuff that I wouldn’t know about otherwise. Other than that, because I live in Southern California, I’m in the car all the time, so I try to do meetings or get stuff done in the car. A lot of Bluetooth.
How do you find new artists for your record label?
I snoop around. I like Hypebeast, Billboard, NPR, AbsolutePunk.net, The Hundreds blog. Or I’ll go through Tumblr looking for new music.
How do you listen to music?
I either do Spotify or YouTube, just because it’s the easiest. We have a wide range of tastes in our house, so it’s easier to go song by song. My kid likes Bob Marley a lot, and more often than not, he has a lot of opinions about the songs I play in the car.
Are you a TV junkie or on an airtime-restricted diet?
We watch a fair bit of TV. We like Girls, Homeland, Veep, just started watching The Americans, a lot of Chopped, and we have Apple TV, so kids shows on Hulu and Netflix are really easy to come by. We’ll also watch Duck Tales and Gummi Bears on YouTube—the kids shows that were big when I was a kid. It must look really ancient to my son, like if I was watching Rocky and Bullwinkle with my dad.
Give us the skinny on your favorite app.
I like all the game apps. I’ve been playing this endless runner called Banana Kong. And I use a lot of kids apps…there’s this one called Elmo Calls that looks like you’re FaceTime-ing with Elmo. If you have a kid up to 4 or 5, I’d definitely recommend getting it. It makes plane rides a lot shorter.
Do you prefer to read in print or on a tablet?
Half and half, I guess. There’s a part of me that really likes how books and magazines feel. My parents, when we go on vacation, are on the Kindle and the iPad exclusively. And for me, it’s a little harder. It’s kind of strange because I feel like I’m the wrong generation for that.
What’s your biggest digital indulgence?
I guess at the end of the day, buying music. I know artists who are all across the spectrum. I have artists that do really well and artists that live basically hand to mouth. I buy a ton of music, regardless of how I consume it. The only time I really listen to music on iTunes is on airplanes.
