Tumblr has introduced its second low-cost, self-service advertising product since February, unveiling "Pinned Posts" for $5 apiece. Brands or consumers with accounts on the social platform can purchase the ad with a credit card or PayPal and have their message positioned at the top of followers’ dashboards for 24 hours.

Followers aren’t forced to stare at the post all day, though, as they can un-pin the promotion if they choose. First reported by Mashable, the new feature is being rolled out to all Tumblr users today.

In terms of low-cost ad products, Pinned Posts follow up on Highlighted Posts ($2 apiece), which the New York-based social media company launched mid-winter.

So far, 2012 has been a year of fairly aggressive monetization efforts for Tumblr. In May, the company ushered in display ads units for the top and right-hand side of its pages.
